Decentralized Wealth Taxation: The Effects of Mobility on Revenues and Inequality

Today’s post uses taxpayer’s data in Spain over 2005-2015, to show that the stock of wealthy individuals living in Madrid has increased following Madrid’s zero-rating the wealth tax after 2011 (the only region characterized by a zero effective tax rate on wealth). The post continues to analyze the impact of tax competition and the resulting mobility on regional tax collection and inequality.
